Eco-Friendly Tropical Home

A three-bedroom, three-bathroom house a short drive from Montezuma village and beach, remodeled by a local Costa Rican architect from a designer-built former office into a house that is wider above than below, which gives the rooms an unusual sense of space and light.

Rooms. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a loft and an office. A large gourmet kitchen with a gas stove, concrete counters and recessed shelving. A gazebo with a barbecue area and fridge, outdoor storage, a bodega and a carport, set in extensive gardens with fruit trees. Mountain views.

How it is built to stay cool. White roof and white walls, vaulted ceilings, overhanging eaves, windows on every wall and a layout designed for cross-ventilation; the house sits in the shade of a large tree. Floors are local, sustainably grown teak. The garden bathrooms have outside showers. Kitchen cabinets are built to resist insects and fungus, the toilets are dual flush, and there are separate septic tanks for grey and black water.

Pool. Saltwater.

Public road access, titled. The water supply isn't published; we'll send you the meter or well details.
